TNI Toothless over Ambalat

The Indonesian Military (TNI) is considered powerless in maintaining the country’s territorial integrity and dignity in the wake of repeated maneuvers by Malaysia in the disputed maritime territory of Ambalat off Kalimantan.

"The dispute means sovereignty over the territory remains a gray area. Therefore, it is important for both nations to uphold ethics by not self-proclaiming ownership of the area using military power," former home minister Lt. Gen. (ret) Syarwan Hamid told a discussion in Jakarta on Friday.

He said now that Malaysia had frequently violated the border, the TNI should open fire should there be another encroachment.

Syarwan said the TNI was reluctant to shoot at Malaysian ships because the government had yet to take a firm stance on the issue.

"The TNI is afraid that if it opens fire without approval from the government, then the commander in charge will be punished," he said. "But, in my opinion, the commander would deserve a medal of honor should he have the guts to open fire."
